5 Year-Old Wins Gold in Karate

Anwesha Spehia from Chandigarh brought laurels to the city by securing Gold Medal in International E-Kata Tenshikan Karate Championship 2020 held online on August 29-30. Nine countries, which included Japan, India, USA, Iraq, Iran, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and South Africa participated in this Championship.

Anwesha took part in 5 to 6 years category, performed ‘Kata Gekisai Dai Ichi’ and secured first position.

Anwesha is five years old and is studying in class one in DAV Model School, Sector 15 Chandigarh. When asked about her source of inspiration, she says, “I got inspiration from my father, Bhuwnesh Spehia who has been teaching me karate since last one year.”

Her father, Bhuwnesh says, “She is fond of karate and does practice for 1-2 hours daily. Anwesha is a bright child and she is good in studies as well. Apart from karate she has interest in painting and dancing also.

She actively participates in extracurricular activities in school too.” He is a karate black belt (2nd DAN- Japan) holder and also her instructor.

Anwesha’s mother Dr. Shammi Spehia is Assistant Professor, Biotechnology. She takes care of her studies and teaches her painting and dance also

Father, Bhuwnesh has been learning karate since his college days from Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. He is an authorized instructor and is teaching karate in Chandigarh. During this pandemic situation he is teaching karate online. He learnt this art from his college mate Surender Sharma who is karate black belt (4th DAN- Japan) holder.

Anwesha‘s parents aspire for her bright future. “We dream to make the nation proud of Anwesha by getting Medal in Olympics in Karate”, they add.
