Can you tell us about your journey as a 4th generation Indian Army officer and the experiences that have had the most significant impact on your life and career? Also shed some light on your graduation days in Chandigarh.
My journey as a fourth-generation Indian Army officer has been profoundly influenced by the bravery and unwavering commitment to service that runs through my family’s veins. The legacy of my ancestors has instilled in me a deep sense of duty towards our nation.
My education at DAV College, Sector-10, Chandigarh provided the perfect foundation for my aspirations. The disciplined environment and the values I absorbed during those years played a pivotal role in shaping my character and sense of responsibility. Notably, my college boasts a remarkable heritage, with 13 courageous individuals, including the esteemed Kargil Hero, Captain Vikram Batra, Param Veer Chakra awardee. Their inspiring stories are honored in the Shaurya Bhawan museum, where their portraits are prominently displayed. Additionally, the college campus itself is home to a War Memorial, standing tall as a tribute to their sacrifices and bravery.
What motivated you to join the Indian Army, following in the footsteps of your family’s rich military tradition?
From my early years, the aspiration to join the Indian Army was ingrained in me, inspired by the profound military legacy of my family. Witnessing the unwavering dedication and sacrifices of my relatives became the catalyst for my deep-rooted desire to serve our nation. Fueled by a sense of duty and guided by the values of honor and courage, I embarked on this noble path, aiming to contribute significantly to our country’s defense and well-being.
Embracing this esteemed journey, I am driven not just by duty, but by a profound passion to preserve the legacy of my forefathers. It is a commitment, a sacred promise to honor the sacrifices of those before me and to ensure a safer, more secure future for the generations ahead.
How did your time in the Army, particularly your service and postings, shape your leadership style and approach to challenges?
Upon my commission, I proudly joined the 3rd Battalion of Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry, stepping straight into the crucible of combat in Manipur from the very first day. My tenure in the Army proved to be a transformative experience, shaping my leadership style and approach to problem-solving. Surrounded by diverse challenges, from commanding troops in high-stress situations to efficiently managing limited resources, my decision-making and leadership skills were sharpened significantly. The Army not only taught me the vital aspects of adaptability and resilience but also underscored the importance of motivation and collaboration within a diverse team, skills that have become invaluable assets in my personal and professional life.
Could you share some memorable moments or achievements from your military career that stand out for you?
One of the most indelible moments in my military journey occurred during my deployment in the Poonch Sector of Jammu & Kashmir. Entrusted with overseeing the security architecture of crucial sites, our team faced a looming threat from militants. Through unwavering courage and coordinated efforts, we successfully repelled the potential attack, ensuring the safety of the area. This experience profoundly underscored the significance of vigilance, rigorous training, and unity amidst adversity.
Recognizing our team’s exceptional performance, I was honored with the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GoC-in-C), Northern Command Commendation card, a testament to the dedication and bravery displayed by every member under my command. This accolade not only celebrated our collective triumph but also served as a reminder of the enduring values of teamwork and unwavering resolve that define the essence of military service.
After retiring from the Army, you ventured into the business world with your own service providing company. What inspired this transition, and how did your military background influence your entrepreneurial endeavors?
My decision to transition into the business world was driven by a deep-seated desire to continue serving society in a different capacity. Drawing from my military background, which instilled in me the virtues of discipline, dedication, and strategic thinking, I found myself equipped with a solid foundation for this new endeavor. The values of integrity, teamwork, and resilience, ingrained in me during my time in the Army, proved to be invaluable assets in navigating the challenges of the business realm. These principles not only guided my decisions but also played a pivotal role in my ability to overcome obstacles and achieve success in the corporate world.
What are the key principles or lessons from your military service that you applied to your business leadership?
Numerous fundamental principles from my military service have seamlessly integrated into my approach to business. Moreover, fostering a profound sense of responsibility towards both my team and society at large, coupled with an unwavering commitment to achieving objectives, have emerged as pivotal aspects of my leadership style. Furthermore, having a strong support system, mastering the art of efficient delegation, and unwavering dedication not only help me navigate these responsibilities but also infuse each task with a sense of fulfillment and unwavering commitment.
As an avid social activist, what are the causes or issues that you are particularly passionate about, and how do you contribute to them?
I am deeply passionate about ensuring the well-being of our armed forces personnel and veterans. Through my involvement in numerous associations and organizations, I actively advocate for their welfare, create employment opportunities, and endeavor to tackle the distinctive challenges they encounter after their military service. Additionally, my commitment extends to empowering women and the underprivileged, promoting education, and championing the cause of sustainable development, all of which hold a special place in my heart.
What advice would you give to young individuals aspiring to follow a similar path of service, entrepreneurship, and social activism?
My counsel is to steadfastly adhere to your beliefs and confront challenges with unwavering courage and determination.
