Rakhi Sharma, a 41-year-old woman master athlete has made the city proud by winning a silver medal in the 400m race at the 43rd National Masters Athletics Championship, held recently at Netaji Subhash Eastern Center Stadium, Salt Lake City, Kolkata under the aegis of Masters Athletics Federation of India.
Ahead of International Women’s Day, Rakhi explained how a woman can empower herself through sports. “One can achieve success in any field of life through fitness and sports. That’s why it is very important to pay attention to your health,” she said.
Long Way to Go!
On asking about her future plans, she said that her next target is to win a medal at the upcoming Asia Masters Athletics Championship, to be held in India after 2-3 months. Her full focus is on the 400m race and she is currently preparing for the same.
Her medal-winning spree started in 2017, when she won 2 gold medals at Open International, and then in 2018, she won 2 silver medals at Delhi Nationals. Subsequently, she won a silver medal each in Guntur in 2019 and Imphal, Manipur in 2020. Similarly, she dominated by winning 2 bronze medals at the AFI Championship in 2022, followed by one in Chennai and one in Vadodara in 2022. Mainly her medals have come in 400 m and 800 m competitions.
Promoting Fitness and Inspiring Women
Aiming to promote fitness and inspire women and the younger generation, 41-year-old Rakhi Sharma established Soul Train Gym & Spa, a fitness centre in Sector 20, Panchkula, six months ago.
A mother of one child, Rakhi started her sports career in 2015 with a marathon race. In 2016, she made her mark in sports by winning two gold medals in the Athletics Championship, Allahabad (Prayagraj).
Talking about her new venture, she said that the special thing about Soul Train Gym & Spa is that it is the only open rooftop gym in Panchkula. Apart from this, its other speciality is that it also has a mezzanine floor.
