The ‘Pitbull’ Sharma

Chandigarh-based boxer Gaganpreet Sharma has carved a name for himself across the globe for his professional boxing expertise!
An Indian Boxing Council (IBC), Super Middle Weight and Indian National Title Holder since 2018, Sharma is a source of inspiration for many.
In an exclusive interview with Gaganpreet Sharma, we talk about his journey as a boxer, his fitness secret, his role in Farhan Akhtar’s Toofan, and a lot more!
Tell us about your journey as a boxer? What inspired you to venture into this field?
As a boxer, my journey was really tough when I had started. It is a dream of mine to become a world champion.
Being an introvert by nature, I was bullied as a child in my school and I never made any friends.
I was always fascinated with the fighting style of Mike Tyson and the only thing that I used to think day and night was about the peek-a-boo style. This style of boxing is really exceptional as it needs a lot of stamina, speed and power which I always possessed. However, I have never been trained by anyone because no one in India knew about this style.
Mike Tyson is my Idol. I have watched hours of YouTube videos of Mike Tyson to learn his fighting style which is known as peek-a-boo. I have won a couple of state-level and national level tournaments including 3 times Inter College Championship, but I was always fascinated towards professional Boxing. So, that’s how I turned into a  pro. My elder brother, Aman Sharma started managing me and soon I got the chance to fight in US and with the grace of God, I won that fight with 3rd round knockdown.
Tell us more about some of your recent accomplishments?
I am currently IBC, Super Middle Weight and Indian National Title Holder since 2018. Moreover, have never been challenged by anyone!
What inspires you to keep you going?
I believe that God has gifted me just one gift. My skills are totally different from other fighters which makes me unique. It is a blessing that inspires me to keep going no matter what happens and achieve my dream which is to become a world champion. Mark my words, “I will be a world champion in professional boxing real soon!”
What is your fitness secret?
I am a pure vegetarian, if I talk about my diet. I am a strict practitioner of celibacy. I have been practising celibacy for the past 25 years!
An ox, elephant and horse are famous for their power, strength and speed and they all are herbivorous. So, believing in it makes me mentally strong to follow my vegetarian diet.
We’ve heard that you’re featuring in Farhan Akhtar’s Tofaan. Tell us more about your experience of working in the same? What can the viewers expect from your role?
Working with Farhan was an amazing experience! I got to learn a lot while working alongside him. His dedication level is at the next level and I really liked the way he always follows a routine which I believe is really great!
My main aim for doing this movie was that I wanted to showcase my talent in front of the world so that people can see that persistence and hard work is the key to achieving your goals. The opportunity to be featured in this movie gave me this chance to showcase my abilities which will help me to achieve my goal which is to “Bring the Title of World Champion to India”.
Chandigarh being your hometown, what is the one thing that you love the most about it? Also, share about your days spent here.
I have been born and brought up in Chandigarh. This city is really close to my heart.
My childhood memories, greenery and various tourist attractions like Sukhna Lake, rock garden and its beautiful roads. The name of this city is derived from the temple of “ChandiMandir” located in the vicinity of the site selected for the city. The deity ‘Chandi’, the goddess of power and a fort of ‘Garh laying beyond the temple gave the city its name “Chandigarh-The City Beautiful”. Moreover, My father Mr Anil Kumar Sharma is also serving in Chandigarh Fire Service as SeniorFire Officer.
