Distancing from Social Distancing

While the Chandigarh Administration claims it is strictly enforcing social distancing at public places, the reality is far from claims being made.

Tricity Scoop lensman Bharat Bhandari visited popular spots of the city and found social distancing norms being flouted blatantly.

It was this week that the UT Administration had claimed that the police and other authorised officials have been directed to have a stricter implementation of social distancing norms, wearing masks etc. Surprise inspections will be made in all marketplaces and public places including Sukhna Lake area to penalise the violators, but enforcement was found wanting at popular spots being frequented by city residents, even though COVID positive figures continue to mount across the country.

Tricity Scoop team visited Sukhna Lake, Sector-22 Mobile Market, Sector-19 Rehri Market, Manimajra and Mauli Jagran, which has recently seen a rise in the number of cases. No police presence was found in these areas and social distancing norms were not being followed.

We could see groups of people on the Sukhna Lake taking a stroll, while a queue outside a Manimajra bank had customers standing without following the norms. Same was the scene outside a bank in Mauli Jagran.

On the other hand, the most popular Sector-22 Mobile Market which has shops clustered close to each other had customers standing close to each other not giving heed to the social distancing norms, and even the shopkeepers were not instructing them to maintain a distance.SOCIAL
